The Nilgiris
The Nilgiris are often called the Blue Hills. For many south Indian families, this magnificent mountain range is a sought after vacation destination to escape the oppressive heat of the plains in the summer. The Nilgiris are home to a number of Indian tribal groups as well as wildlife that cannot be found anywhere else in the world. The mountains offer many peaceful get aways, picturesque scenery and striking view points. Travelers must take the time to visit a tea estate and buy some famous Nilgiri tea. The Nilgiri mountain range is in northwestern Tamil Nadu bordering Kerala and Karnataka.

Ooty
The Queen of the Hills. Ooty is short for Ootacamund or Udhagamandalam. This hill station is a top destination in the Nilgiris. There are hiking and camping opportunities and travelers should visit the botanical gardens, go boating on Ooty and Pykara Lakes, see Pykara Falls or climb Doddabetta peak; the highest point in the mountain range.
Coonoor
Coonoor is a much smaller hill station than Ooty and is not at the same altitude. Still it offers serene countryside and plenty of opportunities for hikers and those who enjoy walking in the tea fields. Visitors can enjoy viewpoints such as Lamb’s Rock or Dolphin’s Nose or having a picnic in Sim’s Park.
Kodaikanal
Kodaikanal is yet another famous hill station in the Nilgiris, though it is quite far from Ooty and Coonoor. Filled with breathtaking viewpoints and natural beauty Kodikanal is perfect for nature lovers. Travelers can take in the beauty of Kodaikanal lake, Coaker’s Walk, Silver Cascade Falls and Bear Shola Falls. It is perfect for a peaceful mountain getaway.
The Toy Train
The Toy Train is an iconic part of any visit to the Nilgiris and is given that name due to its diminutive appearance. One can ride the steam powered train through the mountains and see many gorgeous vistas. You can even ride the train up the mountain from the plains.
