Meghalaya

Meghalaya is a state in the far north east of India and was dubbed “the Scotland of the East” during the British Raj. This wet and jungled state is famous for its many outdoor attractions. Caves, waterfalls, rolling hills: It truly is a paradise for the outdoorsman.

Shillong

This hill station is the capital of Meghalaya. There is plenty to see and do in Shillong and it can also serve as a launching pad to explore the great outdoors this beautiful region has to offer. Visit Umiam lake just outside the city, one of the various museums or shop in the colorful bazaars.

Laitlum Canyon

Hikers and photographers should not miss the chance to visit Laitlum Canyon and its spectacular vistas. The land opens up like a giant amphitheater and is a wonder to behold.

Waterfalls and Caving

Meghalaya is filled with striking waterfalls, chiefly Nohkalikai Falls, but others worth seeing include Elephant Falls, Sweet Falls, Krang Suri Falls and many more. Meghalaya is also home to many limestone and sandstone caves and they leave explorers speechless. To start, spelunkers should check out Krem Khung, Krem Chympe, Krem Labit Kseh or Krem Tyngheng.

Mawryngkhang Bamboo Trek

This unique adventure is well worth the journey south from Shillong. The entire trail is made of bamboo and much of it is built along cliff edges and river gorges. The trail leads the adventurer through gorgeous wetland views but is not for the faint of heart.
